Book Synopsis

Calculus: Catalyzing a National Community for Reform is an internal report of the Directorate for Education and human resources, Division of Undergraduate Education of the National Science Foundation. It lists the Awards given by the National Science Foundation (NSF) from 1987-1995. NSF invested more than $44 million dollars in these calculus reform efforts. Over 350 awards were made during that period to a very broad spectrum of institutions. There is little doubt that NSF has been central to calculus reform.

William Haver begins the report with an overview of th3e NSF Calculus Program. He describes the characteristics of the program, gives evidence of the impact that the NSF Calculus Program has had on calculus teaching the United States, and provides a bibliography of the literature of calculus reform. The book continues with short summaries of all of the awards from 1987 through 1995.
