On the three hundredth anniversary of the publication of van Espen's Jus Ecclesiasticum Universum in 1700, scholars of canon law and history presented papers in English, French and German on the legal traditions which underpinned his works, and the effects of Jansenism on the texts and their reception through history. Article topics include Louvain and its Jansenism, the influence of van Espen's work on the banishment of the Jesuits from The Netherlands early in the eighteenth century, his critics and adherents in the nineteenth century, and what place he holds in current Roman Catholic canon law.
