Book Synopsis

"No other work has focused on this topic; Bellafaire and Graf's scholarly research will fill the vacuum admirably! With its depth and scope . . . Women Doctors in War will appeal to military historians, medical history buffs, and folks interested in women's issues. . . . This publication will be a useful addition to the body of knowledge that defines military medical history." —Mary T. Sarnecky, author, A History of the Army Nurse Corps

“. . . As the role of women in the military expanded and was publicized, an area that has been almost totally neglected is that of women doctors. This is true despite the fact that the only woman recipient of the Medal of Honor is a woman doctor of the Civil War, Dr. Mary Walker. It was extremely difficult for her to get the military to let her perform duties in her specialty and, until recently, it continued to be difficult for those who followed. In the personal stories of the women doctors who struggled to serve, this book gives us an opportunity to see the obstacles placed before them and the ways they worked to overcome them so they too could give their best to the wounded and sick soldiers and their families.” —Wilma L. Vaught, Brig. Gen., USAF (RET), President, Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation, Inc.
