Library Journal

Perlstein has an impressive knowledge of tennis, having combined his experiences as a player, coach, and student of the game in two previous books: Essential Tennis and Winning Doubles. Here, Perlstein analyzes the professionals on the tour, as well as coaches and instructors, developing formulas that he believes will ensure success. The author examines practice routines, shot mechanics, physical conditioning, and match readiness in a step-by-step approach designed to aid competitive players. Although not written with the beginner in mind, this book does emphasize a fundamental that is critical in any sport: mental toughness. Regardless of the level, each athlete must be prepared for the psychological pressures. After reading Perlstein's book, the tennis player will have a clear appreciation of what it takes to win.
