Qiu Xiaolong was born in Shanghai and received an MA in English and American Literature in China. He received a PhD in Comparative Literature from Washington University in St. Louis, where he now teaches. He is the author of Death of a Red Heroine, which has been translated into seven languages, and A Loyal Character Dancer.
From the Anthony Award-winning author of Death of a Red Heroine, the third in the Inpector Chen series.
When Red Is Black offers a complex and riveting portrait of Shanghai, a city in transition from a proletarian dictatorship to a capitalist playground where "nostalgia sells." The larger and more disquieting mystery -- what will happen to dutiful workers like Detective Yu, and even Chief Inspector Chen, as Chinese society continues to change -- is necessarily left unsolved.
