According to the author, the book is designed so that students or classroom instructors can use only those portions necessary for their specific needs or curriculum.
Audience:The audience includes students in various fields that demand knowledge and skills in coding and billing, such as health information technology, medical assisting, medical coding and billing, or insurance/patient accounting. The author is program director and instructor in a coding and health information program at Central Florida College.
Features:Section I provides an overview of the hospital coding and billing processes, which includes a review of the coding and billing rules and is not intended to teach coding. Section II includes the details of the inpatient facility processes of coding and billing. Section III covers the details of the outpatient facility processes for coding and billing. The author notes that the standard facility billing form was being changed during the writing of this book so it contains information that is now out of date. The author does direct the reader to a Web site for new information.
Assessment:This is a very well organized text-workbook for learning about coding and billing from the facility perspective. There are not many books on the market that provide this type of instruction. More frequently, books describe physician professional fee coding and billing. This book includes numerous exercises that are good to reinforce the concepts presented. I noticed the author requested the coding of ICD-9-CM procedure codes for outpatient claims, but, as of the past couple of years, ICD-9-CM procedure codes were no longer required for outpatient claims. Perhaps this was included strictly for coding practice purposes. This is a good book for students to review for the reimbursement and billing portions of coding certification exams. It is reasonably priced and comprehensive.
