Duanmu Hongliang (1912-1996) was a notable Chiense writer who rose to prominence during the Sino-Japanese War.

Howard Goldblatt is research professor of East Asian languages and literatures at the University of Notre Dame.

Haili Kong is professor of Chinese at Swarthmore College.

These nine stories by Duanmu Hongliang exemplify his love of the Manchurian landscape and people. His "native soil" style, which renders his homeland with poetic realist touches, is shared by many modern Chinese writers, including Shen Congwen.
