C. S. Lewis was famous both as a fiction writer and as a Christian thinker, and scholars sometimes divide his personality in two. Yet a large part of Lewis's appeal, for both his audiences, lay in his ability to fuse imagination with instruction. "Let the pictures tell you their own moral," he once advised writers of children's stories. "But if they don't show you any moral, don't put one in."
WAYNE MARTINDALE has a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Riverside, and is associate professor of English at Wheaton College, where he uses Lewis’s works in many of his courses.
JERRY ROOT has an M.Div. from Talbot Theological Seminary and is senior pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Santa Barbara, California. He formerly taught philosophy and religion at College of DuPage in northern Illinois, where he made extensive use of Lewis’s work. He has avidly studied and collected Lewis’s works for many years.
