Author Biography: Charlie Small

Book Synopsis

Charlie Small’s second journal of his adventures was found encased in ice, high on a glacial plateau in the Himalayas. It details even more remarkable deeds and thrilling acts aboard the Jolly Roger with the dastardly lady-pirates of perfidy–and a lot more besides. Charlie Small is a keen amateur explorer. His interests include climbing trees, collecting things, playing computer games, and football. He also enjoys conversing in the secret language of the gorillas. His present whereabouts is unknown, but we understand that he’s hoping to be home in time for tea.

Children's Literature

Every child dreams of daring adventures and impossible missions in far off places. For Charlie Small, those adventures are real and he has the journals to prove it. In a continuation of his adventures from the first book in the series "Gorilla City," Charlie's second journal chronicles his capture by a group of blood-thirsty women pirates. Though he is desperate to escape, Charlie is forced to clean and cook for the pirates and is locked up every night. Charlie develops several schemes that he hopes will help him to escape, but his attempts at escape result in him accidentally saving the ship several times. But by saving the ship, he manages to gain the pirate's trust which finally provides him with a chance to escape. The pages are filled with drawings of pirates and Charlie and numerous inventions he comes across or creates; the edges are darkened to appear weathered, and several fake water spots appearing throughout the text add whimsy to the text.
