Author Biography: Marcy Goldberg Sacks

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

Book Synopsis

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. A Level 1 series that contains simple sentences and concepts.

Children's Literature

When Curious George runs out of carrots while helping to feed his neighbor's rabbits, he becomes curious about carrots. The man in the yellow hat teaches George how they grow and George plants a garden. One carrot grows especially large and well shaped. George wants to save it. When his neighbor's rabbits get loose, George goes looking for them. He finds them very hungry and gives them his carrot to eat while he goes to get his neighbor. His perfect carrot saves the lives of the rabbits. The book is colorfully illustrated and the expressions on George's face show all of his emotions—from curiosity and pleasure to fear and worry and pride—at having a heroic carrot. The book offers information about finding good carrots and includes a simple recipe for carrot muffins. A Level 1 book in the "CGTV Reader" series. Reviewer: Christine Cassello
