Virtually all immigrants to Israel after 1949 were regarded as Jewish in their countries of origin. When they arrived in their new home, however, the enormous social and cultural differences among them and the varieties of their religious customs provided the stimulus for the recognition of new, distinct ethnic groups.
Focuses on how the Ashkenazim, Sephardim, established Ethiopians, and recently arrived Ethiopians express their identity in Israel and maintain their boundaries from other Jewish groups. The study particularly explores the role of religious expression in maintaining ethnicity, the role of gender in the transmission and maintenance of ethnic identity in the public and private spheres, and the role of regional affiliation in the maintenance of ethnic identity.
