Description:This two-volume update presents the diseases that affect primarily or exclusively people living in the tropics. Physicians, including radiologists, poorly understand the tropical diseases that afflict millions of people. The authors attempt to show the pathologic, laboratory, clinical, and imaging characteristics of these tropical diseases. This is the second edition of a book first published in 1981.
Purpose:Since the publication of the first edition, AIDS has become a major cause of suffering throughout the world. Tuberculosis and malaria are showing increased drug resistance, while other diseases, such as smallpox, have disappeared or been controlled by public health measures. Computed tomography and ultrasound are more available in the tropical countries than they were 20 years ago. This new edition succeeds in demonstrating tropical diseases, their clinical syndromes and their imaging features in a clear, concise manner. The therapy of tropical diseases is not covered in any detail.
Audience:I do not know of any other text on tropical medicine aimed at radiologists. The authors are recognized authorities on the imaging of tropical diseases. Radiologists will benefit from reading this book. The chapters at the end of Volume 2 on equipment and technique after a crash course in radiography and ultrasound for those setting up an imaging suite in a tropical location.
Features:Volume 1 covers major multisystem diseases, including parasitic, bacterial, and fungal diseases and AIDS. Volume 2 covers diseases of the GI tract, the chest, soft tissues and bone, neoplastic diseases and other tropical diseases (mostly infectious).
Assessment:This is a high-quality, encyclopedic text. There are other books on tropical medicine, such as The Travel and Tropical Medicine Manual by Jong and McMullen (W. B. Saunders, 1995). However, this book is aimed specifically at radiologists and has over 2,000 pathologic, clinical and radiologic images.
