Book Synopsis

Experiential learning strategies make it possible for training to resemble a learner's work environment. This capacity has proven to yield greater understanding, retention, and application on the job than training approaches that are removed from the real world.

The Handbook of Experiential Learning is a comprehensive resource that draws together contemporary thought and practice on a wide range of experiential learning applications from the best-known authorities on the topic. In this collaborative work, editor Mel Silberman—experiential learning guru and creator of the renowned Active Training method—draws together the most recent thought and practice on a wide gamut of experiential learning applications from the leading experts in the field including:

  • Games and simulations

  • Action learning

  • Role play and Improv

  • Storytelling

  • Adventure activity

  • Reflective practice

  • Creative play

It also describes the use of experiential learning in topics such as technical skills, leadership, team building, diversity and cross-cultural training, and emotional intelligence.

The Handbook of Experiential Learning also reviews the basics of experiential learning, discusses the recent advances and outlines contemporary practices,'and shows why experiential learning is a proven and effective model for development.

In addition, The Handbook is filled with illustrative cases and practical examples of experiential learning in both traditional and emerging settings, with substantial guidance offered by the contributors on recognizing and designing learning rich experiences.
