Author Biography: P. G. Wodehouse

Comic timing would seem less of the essence in literature until you read the English wit of P. G. Wodehouse, who shows just how a well-placed comment or properly inflected phrase can create a response that is often all too rare during a reading session: A loud, hearty laugh.

The Gem Collector is a novel by P. G. Wodehouse that first appeared as a novella in the December 1909 issue of Ainslee's magazine. Revised and expanded, and with the title changed to The Intrusion of Jimmy, it was published as a book in 1910. It was serialized under that title in the British weekly magazine Titbits, between 11 June and 10 September, before being published, as A Gentleman of Leisurein 1910. There are minor textual differences between the American and British editions.

A Gentleman of Leisure was adapted for the stage in 1911 and has twice been filmed, in 1915 and 1923.

The action begins with playboy bachelor Jimmy Pitt in New York; having fallen in love on a transatlantic liner, he befriends a small-time burglar and breaks into a police captain's house as a result of a bet. The cast of characters head to England, and from there on it is a typically Wodehousian Jimmy Pitt, set at the stately Dreever Castle, overflowing with impostors, detectives, crooks, scheming lovers and conniving aunts. ---From Wikipedia
