Author Biography: Joyce J. Fitzpatrick

Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, is the Elizabeth Brooks Ford Professor of Nursing, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was Dean from 1982 through 1997. She has received numerous honors and awards including the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award 18 times. Dr. Fitzpatrick is widely published in nursing and health care literature. She is senior editor for the Annual Review of Nursing Research. series, now in its 24th volume. In 1998 Dr. Fitzpatrick was senior editor of the of the first volume of the classic Encyclopedia of Nursing Research as well as a series of Research Digests, including Nursing Research Digest, Maternal Child Health Nursing Research Digest, Geriatric Nursing Research Digest, and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Research Digest. She is co-series editor for the Annual Review of Nursing Research (Annual, Springer Publishing Company); co-author, with Jeanne Novotny, Doris Lippman, and Nicole Sanders, of 101 Careers in Nursing (Springer paperback 2006); co-author, with Mary Jane Smith, of Best Practices in Nursing Education: Stories of Exemplary Teachers (Springer Publishing Company, 2005); co-editor, with Kristen S. Meredith Wallace Kazer, PhD, APRN, A/GNP-C, is Associate Professor, Fairfield University, School of Nursing. Dr. Kazer earned an MSN in medical-surgical nursing with a specialty in geriatrics from Yale University and a PhD in nursing research/theory development at NYU, where she won a pre-doctoral fellowship, Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing. In this capacity she authored and edited the book series, Try This: Best Practices in Geriatric Nursing. In 2001, she won the Springer Publishing Company Award for Applied Nursing Research. She was the Managing Editor of the Journal of Applied Nursing Research and is currently the research brief editor for the journal. Dr. Kazer has also authored numerous journal articles and book chapters. At Springer, she published Prostate Cancer: Nursing Assessment Management and Care (2002), an AJN Book of the Year Award winner; Essentials of Gerontological Nursing (2007); Gerontological Nurse Certification Review (2008), and acted as associate editor on another AJN Book of the Year Award winner, Encyclopedia of Nursing Research, 2nd edition (2006). In 2002 she was Associate Editor, The Geriatric Nursing Research Digest. She is a recent recipient of the ENRS/John A. Hartford Foundation investigator award. She is an adult and gerontological NP and currently practices in primary care with a focus on chronic illness in the elderly.
