Author Biography: Paul Lee

Book Synopsis

When William Waite died, after a life steeped in black magic, his family thought that the terror was over. Two years later, all the people close to him begin to suffer from mysterious illnesses, including the loss of a baby. His youngest son, Brandon Waite, desperate to protect his family, begins to dig into his dead father's bag of tricks. But his desire to protect his loved ones forces him to cover up his own tentative steps into witchcraft, leading him to mix deception with demon conjuration, isolating himself in a terrible world where his soul hangs in the balance. The townspeople he grew up with have always known there's something wrong with the Waite family, and their worst fears are proven true in a fiery climax on town hill, with the devil returns to New England. Includes the four-issue mini-series in addition to previously unpublished stories.

Library Journal

Brandon Waite's late father investigated dark sorcery, but Brandon himself has steadfastly kept to more benign magic. When a series of unexplained ailments leads Brandon to the conclusion that his family is cursed, he contacts some of his father's old colleagues for further information. He discovers that his father was deeper into the occult than Brandon knew and that his plans extended past his death. Brandon is forced to face demons to discover the truth. In addition to providing the requisite suspense to sustain a horror tale, Allie is good at handling his cast of characters, including Brandon's disbelieving older brother Dexter; Dexter's pregnant wife, Tabitha; and especially Brandon's lover, Sarah, who has a difficult time with the way Brandon handles the whole affair. The artwork by Paul Lee and Brian Horton, colored by Dave Stewart, has a rough and realistic look that suits the story. Three short backup stories and a text feature provide interesting background. With some nudity, sex, bloody violence, and a mature feel, this work is probably best for adult collections. It is a straightforward horror story, capably told and recommended for fans of the genre.
