Author Biography: Bill Mooney

Bill Mooney won his second Eclipse Award for magazine writing in 2007. He served as associate editor of the old Thoroughbred Record and The Thoroughbred Times, and contributed to a number of horse racing programs on ESPN.

George Ennor was a racing correspondent for The Sporting Life for almost 40 years and its chief reporter for 25 years. He was president of the Horserace Writers & Photographers Association—and named racing journalist of the year in 1982. The HWPA subsequently instituted an annual George Ennor award in his honor.

Book Synopsis

Written by acknowledged authorities on the racing scene in the United States, UK, and Australia, and updated to the end of the 2005-06 winter season, this is a definitive work, with every page a visually exciting and information-packed celebration of the sport.

Library Journal

In this update to the 2007 edition, Mooney (ed., Thoroughbred Times) and Ennor (World Encyclopedia of Horse Racing) offer an unparalleled international look at horse-racing history and practice. Divided into ten chapters, the book first profiles racing's early history on both sides of the Atlantic. A chapter on current customs, organized by nation, follows. Thereafter, chapter segments are devoted to profiling significant races, legendary horses, renowned jockeys, and an alphabetized collection of other exceptional trainers, owners, and breeders. Three concluding chapters are dedicated to subjects like gambling, scandals, and trivia.
