Author Biography: C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis was famous both as a fiction writer and as a Christian thinker, and scholars sometimes divide his personality in two. Yet a large part of Lewis's appeal, for both his audiences, lay in his ability to fuse imagination with instruction. "Let the pictures tell you their own moral," he once advised writers of children's stories. "But if they don't show you any moral, don't put one in."

Book Synopsis

C.S. Lewis, one of the world's most celebrated authors, writes candidly, clearly and from the heart about the deepest human concerns of faith, joy and love in this outstanding collection of four of his best loved works. Lewis' autobiographical conversion story, Surprised by Joy, tells the true tale of a modern man who loses his faith and eventually reasons his way back to an acceptance of Christianity. Not choosing God as a last alternative or as a way out of an emotional crisis, his thoughtful path to the ultimate answer serves as an honest and inspiring story for his readers. In Reflections on the Psalms, C.S. Lewis brings wisdom, sophistication and reverence to his discussion of this popular book of the Bible, exploring the relevance of the Psalms to contemporary life. He next turns to a description of the many faces of love in The Four Loves. There are four basic kinds of human love: affection, friendship, erotic love, and the love of God, and each has certain possibilities and problems. Yet, Lewis recommends the risks that accompany the rewards, since "hell is the only place outside of heaven where we can be safe from the dangers of love." Finally, meditations appropriate for every day of the Christian year are found in The Business of Heaven. Taken from a wide range of Lewis' writings, they are designed to make the cycle of the church year a timeless and refreshingly new spiritual experience. As Lewis once wrote, "Joy is theserious business of heaven," and that spiritual joy, faith and love are celebrated in the writings contained in this special collection.
