Author Biography: Andrew Carnegie

Commonly called a "robber baron," Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) amassed an immense fortune through shrewd investments, culminating in the creation of Carnegie Steel Company. Carnegie later sold his steel company to J.P. Morgan for $480 million in 1901.

After selling Carnegie Steel, Carnegie retired to pursue philanthropy. He gave away millions of dollars to establish Carnegie Libraries across the English-speaking world, among many other charitable causes. Carnegie gave away more than $380 million before and after his death in 1919.
