Alster was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1922, escaped to Holland following Kristallnact, and made his way to the US to rejoin his family. His life since has included fighting in the US Army during World War II, marrying and raising a family, working as an itinerant salesman, travelling to Israel, and participating in Jewish causes.
