Description:In a wonderful question and answer format, this book covers the must-know, always-asked facts and principles of general surgery. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose:Its purpose is to provide concisely the information medical students need to know for the general surgery clerkship. The book is needed; not only is it a single source with all the facts students must know for the various types of general surgery cases, its format mimics the style of teaching students will inevitably encounter.
Audience:Although written for medical students in their general surgery clerkship, the book remains a relevant and highly useful book even for surgery interns. As a trauma, burn, and critical care surgeon, the author is an expert.
Features:The book covers pathophysiology, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and perioperative management of conditions general surgeons regularly encounter, as well as pearls unique to surgery such as vocabulary, surgical instruments, and complications. Its hallmark is the thorough coverage of the facts medical students are expected to know in a format which replicates the "pimping" experience they encounter. It is well organized and formatted so that one can scan the material quickly. This book is unique for its format: nearly all is question and answer.
Assessment:Without a doubt, this is the book medical students need to carry in their pockets for the general surgery clerkship. As a surgery intern, I have found myself turning to it to review those must-know surgical pearls; its clear organization and formatting make it a useful, easy to navigate tool. It is unlike any other general surgery clerkship book. The fifth edition has a few new features and facts such as a set of microvignettes for rapid review, but the book is largely unchanged. Students would be just as well prepared with the older edition.
