MARILYN J. ROSS is Professor of Higher Education at Florida Memorial College in Miami.
This study investigates how and why 17 African-American male students were able to surmount the obstacles presented growing up in the inner city and go on to be successful, constructive citizens.
Ross taught at Florida Memorial College for 20 years before it became the subject of her study. She interviewed 34 members of a group called The President's Men, whose criteria for joining included a 3.0 grade-point-average, leadership potential, and community and campus involvement. The study investigates and documents the special strengths and skills that the group utilized to overcome economic and social hardships in pursuing their goals.
