Author Judith Dutson owns and operates Horsefeather Farm, a recuperative care facility for horses recovering from surgery or illness, located in Plain City, Ohio. Judith is also a part-time research assistant at the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department at the Ohio State University.

Dutson's comprehensive guide is written for the American horse aficionado, and covers the range of breeds found in the United States from Shetland Ponies to Clydesdales. Color photographs and illustrations accompany each listing, which explains breed characteristics, utility, appearance and color. Desirable and undesirable traits are shown in illustrations.
