Sound waves are bouncing all around you; some you can hear, but others you can't. In Sound, Discovery Channel takes you on a journey through the hearing process and beyond. Learn about a partnership that exists between the brain and our ears that helps us to interpret sound vibrations. And find out how sound waves can heal us or harm us.
In June 1875, Alexander Graham Bell heard a twang on a wire and realized he could create an instrument that would move sound telegraphically. In 1947 Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier and two women on different sides of the Atlantic soon matched his accomplishment. In this installment of the "Discovery Channel School Science" series, a great deal about sound and how it is used is explained in short bursts. Divided into two page segments, the book uses a Q&A segment to introduce the basic science of wave motion. This made-up interview with a rooster is slightly cloying, but the information is good. And the rest of the book is great. In a section labeled "Eyewitness Account" the writers introduce Beverly Biderman who received a cochlear implant, allowing her to hear for the first time. Another section called "Picture This" discusses animals' ears. Each section includes an activity. Illustrations are photos and drawings that break up the text and provide connections to children's lives. For example, one picture shows bass player Flea, from the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea wears earplugs while playing to protect his hearing. The book includes a table of contents and a puzzle with a solution at the end. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing
