The sense of small-town drama and kinship is well portrayed; Sophie's sense of "smothering" was readily apparent and her decision to run away with her love is quite believable. Well researched historical detail brought Turn-of-the-Century America to life; allowing this reader to become a part of the story with all of its triumphs and tragedies.
