Book Synopsis

The body of writings described in this volume consists of selected publications authored by sociologists and anthropologists working as regular World Bank staff or as consultants to the Bank. These works were published during less than two decades, essentially from 1975 to 1993. The bibliography covers the topical areas withing which Bank sociologists and anthropologists have done most of their work. They have drawn from, and contributed to, the theories of social change and development; the sociology and anthropology of population settlement and resettlement; the sociology of education; the sociology of agriculture and natural resource management; the anthropological study of indigenous and tribal people, and other important domains. The publications annotated in this volume are grouped under headings such as Social Organization, Settlement and Resettlement, Social Variables in Environmental Management, Social Policy in Sectoral Perspective, and Social Research and Methodology. Special sub-sections are devoted to works about the general theoretical and epistemological issues of translating social science knowledge into policy and programs. Primarily, the bibliography is intended to help locate publications. However, the larger purpose of the annotations is to provide substantive information about the sets of ideas put forward in this body of sociological and anthropological writings, and to indicate how social science knowledge is being used to craft development programs and policies.
