Book Synopsis

Simply Devine: Memoirs of a Hall of Fame Coach is the authorized autobiography of Dan Devine, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Devine spent his storied career as a head coach at Arizona State University (27-3-1), the University of Missouri (92 victories in 13 seasons, including a triumph over Navy in the 1961 Orange Bowl), the Green Bay Packers (1971-74), then finally at Notre Dame (53-16-1, including the 1977 national champs). On five different occasions in four different decades, Devine's teams were contenders for college football's top ranking. His most famous athlete was Fighting Irish quarterback Joe Montana. In Simply Devine, the coach uncoversnew information about his dysfunctional childhood, behind-the-scenes stories about his collegiate stops and with the Packers, and his involvement with the civil rights movement. This book brings forth the human side of Devine, a portrayal that contrasts the depiction he received from the media. Penn State's Joe Paterno contributes the foreward, while long-time friend and confident Joe Garagiola writes an insightful prologue.
