Book Synopsis

All you ever needed to know about running a successful school library! This fully updated new edition covers the basics in addition to today's unique technology challenges.

· Shares the best of the best from Library Media Connection (LMC) magazine, written by practitioners and industry heavy-hitters

· Aligns with Information Power's definition of the threefold role of the library media specialist

K-12 school librarians have come to count on the proven, practical advice in previous editions of this comprehensive guidebook for school libraries. The sixth edition updates every topic, from collection development and standardized testing to integrating the Web into the research process.

VOYA

Articles previously published in Library Media Connection magazine, focusing on "advice and descriptions of best practices," are divided into five sections. The advantage of this collection is that it brings together a diversity of topics in articles written by educators in the field as well as by school library media specialists who represent perspectives from elementary, middle, and high school libraries situated in urban, suburban, or rural areas. The articles vary: Some incorporate a more rigorous approach in relating theory and standards to practice than others; some articles deal with perennial topics such as advocacy, budgeting, collaboration, scheduling, information literacy, assessment, and copyright; others discuss issues such as the relation between No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and the school library media center, the teaching of reading strategies, or how to best incorporate new technologies into the school library media center program. Excluded are articles on lesson plans and book-related topics. There is an appendix containing resources for each section and an author, title, and subject index. This collection can be especially helpful for new school library media specialists who are looking for ways to incorporate tried-and-tested best practices, based on the principles of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (ALA, 1998/VOYA August 1999), into their own programs. As the authors suggest, some articles could also be used as starting points for discussions in educational settings. It is a useful collection that can supplement research articles and other books on organization and management in the school library field. Reviewer: Hilary Crew
