Book Synopsis

Kids (and parents) will marvel at the more than 250 fun and fact-filled lists packed into the "Scholastic Book of Lists." In an easy-to-read format, kids can find out everything from "10 Gross Things People Really Eat" to helpful school information like "The U.S. Presidents." Every page contains a list that covers a specific aspect of pop culture, history, weather, science, the arts, animals, sports, and more. The fresh, kid-friendly design with numerous (and humorous) illustrations will appeal to kids, whether they are browsing for entertainment or for some quick homework help.

Children's Literature

In the introduction, the authors remind the reader how much some lists can change over time and how some facts will remain the same. The pop culture section, of course, will date very fast, but it all makes for interesting reading. The cover shows the title in sparkling silver type and inside, the navy blue and lime green ink gives a fun, funky look to the pages of lists. The chunky typeface used for the text, the authors' lighthearted comments relating to the lists, and the silly, cartoon illustrations scattered throughout the book liven up reading. Each chapter has a page for the reader to compile their own lists. There are even a number of quizzes tucked into many of the chapters. The book is divided into twelve different chapters or subjects, including history, social studies, the world, the weather, numbers, science, words, the arts, pop culture, animals, sports, and a miscellaneous section. Each of these chapters covers a wide spectrum of interests within the subject. A list of founding fathers, Roman emperors, and major wars are expected in the history chapter. However, a list of extinct countries is an interesting addition to the history chapter. Alongside lists of rocks, minerals, and the technical names for the parts of your eye, the science section gives a list of famous robots from films and books. The back matter contains an index, the quiz answers, and a list of "Good-bye" translated into twenty different languages.
