The creators of the popular Say Hola books now take their Spanish-language adventure to the circus. Readers will get to see the greatest show on earth as performed by trapecistas (trapeze artists), payasos (clowns), leones (lions), and elefantes (elephants). Through whimsical art and rhyming text, Say Hola to Spanish at the Circus is a great way to learn the second most spoken language in the U.S.
K-Gr 3-The "Say Hola" folks do it again, mixing English and Spanish in just the right proportion so readers and listeners can clearly understand the text. This time, the characters go to the circus. "Come to el circo. Bring tu mam ,/and tus hermanos, abuelos, pap ." A pig, lamb, rabbit, and turtle are also attending. In the one-ring circus, children will see payasos (clowns), seals, lions, an octopus playing instruments, and a chicken. These animals might not be in most people's circus experience. Indeed, the author stretches the theme to include explanations for the weather and nature: as the show ends and the spectators leave the tent, they experience a shower and see a rainbow, plants, and a butterfly. The rhyme scheme is occasionally awkward, forcing a few lines and interrupting the flow of the book. Cartoon illustrations in flat golds, reds, purples, and blues have humorous details. Lots of two-page spreads give a sense of the size of the ring and the crowd. Like the earlier titles, this one is useful, but it's not quite as good.-Sally Bates Goodroe, Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
