Dave Szatmary - Library Journal

This oversized coffee-table book, chock-full of more than 250 vibrant and eye-catching photos, provides a chronological oral history of the rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The band members start with the group's humble beginnings in Gainesville, FL, move to their first recording contract and their breakthrough album, Damn the Torpedoes, and continue with their rock 'n' roll odyssey, album by album. Petty also shares the thrill of a tour with Bob Dylan and his wonderment as part of the Traveling Wilburys, which included Dylan, Sun Records legend Roy Orbison, ex-Beatle George Harrison, and Jeff Lynne. Although he offers engrossing insight into his music and the business of rock 'n' roll, Petty seldom reveals much about his personal life or his feelings outside the music business. Nonetheless, this effort will be a welcome addition for Petty fans and displays a healthy slice of rock 'n' roll history of the last 30 years. Recommended for general audiences and music fans alike. [Also included are interviews from director Peter Bogdanovich's documentary of the same title, which premiered in October 2007.-Ed.]
