PreS-Gr 1-The first page of each spread offers a rhymed riddle that includes the title phrase. Readers must lift the flap on the opposite page to find the answer, which is provided in picture and text. Children will enjoy the colorful, bold graphics, guessing-game element, and lift-the-flap format. However, these titles are not for infants and toddlers. Concepts and clues presented are suited for preschool/kindergarten interests and experiences, and the heavy use of rhyme, repetition, and alliteration is obviously meant to develop early literacy skills. Attempting to adhere to the rhyming patterns results in clues and answers that are often forced and awkward. "I dig with a strong arm" is a clue for "I work on a farm" (Roo). Children are more likely to answer "firefighter" to "I carry a heavy hose with me" than "I'm here to fight the fire."
