VOYA

Rob Reid has included summaries and directions for read-alouds from more than 200 titles in books for elementary, junior high, and high school students. The book contains tips for successful read-alouds, a list of titles by subject (like historical fiction and comedy), and grade-level recommendations. The summaries for each title are a paragraph in length, and the directions for the ten-minute read-aloud are explained in detail. Unfortunately, actual text from the recommended book isn't included, but Reid notes things like, "Continue by reading the short chapter 6 and chapter 7" for Kate DiCamillo's Because of Winn Dixie (Candlewick, 2000). Older popular titles like Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl (Disney Hyperion, 2001) and Beverly Naidoo's The Other Side of Truth (Amistad, 2000) are discussed, as well as newer, well-liked titles such as Walter Dean Myers's Sunrise over Fallujah (Scholastic, 2008) and Heather Dyer's Ibby's Magic Weekend (Chicken House, 2008). The newest title noted was published in 2007, and the majority of titles are recommended for upper elementary and middle school students. Reid is a regular contributor to LibrarySparks and Book Links magazines. This title is recommended for any librarian who needs handy read-alouds, but the price is a bit daunting for librarians on a shoestring budget. Reviewer: Sarah Hill
