Tal (security studies, Tel Aviv U.) was an official of Israel's General Security Service, and a member of the delegation to the Madrid Conference and to peace talks with Jordan. Here he explains how the Egyptian and Jordanian regimes have met the challenge of Islamic fundamentalism in both its violent and non-violent forms, evaluates the results of the confrontation, and suggests a prognosis for the coming years.
