Book Synopsis

Learn the therapeutic skills you need for your role in psychiatric nursing care! Psychiatric Nursing uses a practical, three-pronged approach to psychotherapeutic management that clearly explains how to care for patients with psychiatric disorders. It emphasizes the nurse's three primary tools: themselves, medications, and the environment. Written by Norman L. Keltner, Carol E. Bostrom, and Teena McGuinness, each an educator and advanced practice nurse, this text covers the latest trends and treatments and provides a solid, real-world foundation for the practice of safe and effective psychiatric nursing care.

Unique! A practical three-pronged approach to psychotherapeutic management includes: 1) the therapeutic nurse-patient relationship, 2) psychopharmacology, and 3) milieu management.

This text is the third edition of a comprehensive and forthrightly written psychiatric nursing text. The previous editions were published in1991 and 1995. The purpose is to present accurate and meaningful psychiatric nursing topics in a non-sexist language style with features that keep the student in mind, including straightforward language describing the psychotherapeutic management model of psychiatric nursing. These goals are worthy and well met. This book is written for the student, to address important issues of care, and for experts, to refine their care throughout every aspect of practice. The editors and contributors are clinically expert and present the topic areas thoroughly. Many fine features of this text enhance learning. The tear-out worksheets for each chapter and the drug cards are especially useful. Good historical background was noted in several areas, which increases the reader's interest and applicability of the material. The illustrations are generally useful; some are basic with unclear elements. Appendixes and the index are relevant, detailed, and help weave concepts of the text and the realities of practice together. This is a good psychiatric nursing text with clear definitions and descriptions of the psychotherapeutic management model of psychiatric nursing and role differentiations. The updated information in this edition is especially useful for educating and practicing contemporary psychiatric nursing.
