Originally printed in 1960, this study traces the exploits of pirates who pursued new plunder and reduced competition in the waters of the Pacific Ocean along the vulnerable coast of New Spain. Using published and unpublished shipboard chronicles, and documents from Spanish archives, Gerhard explores nearly 200 years of pirate exploits. His colorful narrative covers the Elizabethan pirates such as Sir Francis Drake and the crew of the Golden Hind, Dutch raiders, mercenary buccaneers including the infamous Captain Morgan, and English privateers and smugglers.
