Plants are so important in people's lives. People build houses and furniture from the wood of trees. People wear clothing made from cotton. People eat plants. "We use lots of grains to make bread, cereal and cookies." People eat the roots of plants (carrots) and the leaves (lettuce) and the flowers (broccoli). Some medicines come from plants. Plants are also important for animals. Most of them eat plants and many use plants for homes. "Beavers chew down trees to build homes." But most important, plants give people the oxygen needed to stay alive. From the "I Like Plants!" series written for beginning readers, this colorful and informative book will show kids just how much people need plants. Large print, straightforward text and color photographs on every page will keep the attention of the youngest readers. The beginning pages include a table of contents, glossary and an illustration of the parts of a plant. At the end of the book, readers will find directions for a simple activity ("What Plants Do You Eat?")as well as a brief list of books and websites to learn more. Although written for beginning readers, preschool and kindergarten teachers would find this book appropriate to share with nonreaders.
