Book Synopsis

The twelve updated and completely redesigned books in this series are each devoted to a month of the year. Featuring vibrant new photographs and fascinating facts, they cover the number of days, the season, the weather, holidays, and special events that happen for each month. Each book also addresses how weather varies each month for different parts of the country.

Marilyn Courtot - Children's Literature

As with the other books in the "Months of the Year" series, Brode introduces young readers to some of the characteristics, events and activities in the month of November. First, readers learn that it is the eleventh month of the year and that it has 30 days. Since November is part of the autumn months, in some places it starts to get cold. During this month national and local elections usually take place and adult citizens have an opportunity to vote for those who will run the country. In addition, there are several holidays in November. On the 11th, we celebrate Veteran's Day honoring those who fought in all wars. Another holdiay that just about everyone celebrates is Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time when people can express their gratitude for everything in their lives. It is usually the time of the final harvest and many of the favorite foods eaten at Thanksgiving reflect this harvest roasted corn, pumpkin pie and a big plump turkey. The month of November is followed by December and that means winter will begin. Throughout the text there are pages of full-color photographs showing kids engaged in many of the activities described. A calendar showing the months of the year and the seasons wraps up the text. Some of the pages have rhetorical questions, which, rather than making it interactive, take away from the book. There is a three-word glossary. 2003, Weekly Reader,
