New First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy: What Your Child Needs to Know » (Revised)

E.D. Hirsch, Jr. is the Linden Kent Memorial Professor of English at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and the author of Cultural Literacy, The First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, and The Core Knowledge Series. Dr. Hirsch is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has been a senior fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is president of the Core Knowledge Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to educational reform.

Hirsch's (U. of Virginia) text is a revised edition of the 1996 publication, A First Dictionary of Cultural Literacy. Based on input from several hundred teachers and parents across the nation, the text outlines the knowledge that American children should know by the end of sixth grade. The dictionary features some 3,000 entries organized into 21 thematic sections on subjects such as fine arts, mathematics, world geography, world history, science and technology, proverbs, and idioms, and is illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, and diagrams.
