John G. Cawelti is professor emeritus of English and humanities at the University of Kentucky. His many books include Apostles of the Self-Made Man; Adventure, Mystery, and Romance; Leon Forrest; and The Six-Gun Mystique Sequel.
This collection of 25 essays focuses on three themes: the theory of popular genres, the role of violence in American culture, and the literature of mystery. Using examples from well-known movies, television, literature, and music, Cawelti (emeritus, U. of Kentucky) shows how they reflect the evolving psychological, sociological, and political state of the nation. The essays were previously published in various journals between 1968 and 2003. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
