New Statesman writer Richard Boston, reviewing My Life and Loves nearly fifty years after it was first published, declared that "Harris deserves credit for his courage in writing not only with such explicitness on subjects that were not at that time mentionable in polite society, but also for publishing it under his own name." Boston wrote in conclusion that while Harris "may have been a rascal, a rogue, a cad . . . in the stifling, puritanical, repressed, hypocritical society he lived in, the bounder emerges as a distinctly attractive role."
