Book Synopsis

The Second Edition of this popular text presents over 370 musculoskeletal imaging cases from the teaching files of leading medical centers. The format replicates the learning experience of sitting at the viewbox with an expert consultant, honing your diagnostic reasoning skills—an excellent aid in preparing for board exams. All cases are presented as unknowns in a consistent format—a brief clinical history, one or more images, a description of the findings, the diagnosis, and a discussion.

Organized by anatomic region, the case collection encompasses all current imaging modalities and all categories of musculoskeletal disease. This edition includes 37 new cases and new images for 140 cases.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Patrick R Cox, M.D., Ph.D.(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description:This is the second edition of an excellent case-based review of musculoskeletal abnormalities. Since the first edition of 1999, numerous cases have been added and updated using multiple imaging modalities.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide an updated resource that recapitulates the learning experience of case review with an attending musculoskeletal radiologist. This is a time-tested approach that has proven useful for teaching any section of radiology. By having multiple cases with excellent commentary, the book provides the additional cases needed by residents to sharpen their musculoskeletal skills.
Audience:The authors focus on radiology residents preparing for oral board review as an audience. However, this book is useful for beginning residents to practice cases or board certified radiologists who simply want to refine their musculoskeletal skills. The authors are experts in the field having published extensively on musculoskeletal imaging.
Features:Each case contains single or multiple images by one or more modalities. Descriptions of each finding are done precisely and concisely. Important teaching points for each case include anatomic distribution, pathophysiology, treatment, and differential diagnosis. The companion cases demonstrate additional examples of an abnormality using the same or different imaging modality. This useful teaching device helps solidify in the reader's mind the findings among different modalities. Appendixes list the cases for reference by CT, MRI, or pathophysiology.
Assessment:The authors have successfully provided another useful case review book for oral board review and general training. It has excellent image quality which is often higher than that of many other review texts and/or CD-ROMs. This is a welcome update to the first edition because it provides an increased focus on cross-sectional imaging which is reflected in daily practice.
