More Than Letters: Literacy Activities for Preschool, Kindergarten, and First Grade »

Sally Moomaw is professional development coordinator and adjunct instructor at the Arlitt Child and Family Research and Education Center at the University of Cincinnati. She is also the co-author of the "More Than...Series" and Lessons from Turtle Island: Native Curriculum in Early Childhood Classrooms. Brenda Hieronymus is an early childhood education specialist and adjunct instructor at the Arlitt Center. She was named Teacher of the Year in 1999 by the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children.

There is perhaps nothing more important in a child's education than the development of literacy skills. From the moment they are exposed to books, children are beginning to understand that what is spoken can also be written. These important discoveries aid in the construction of a child's earliest literacy concepts and make the prospect of reading and writing attainable and exciting.

The latest in a series of discovery and activity books, More Than Letters is filled with dozens of fun and engaging activities designed to make literacy adventurous and meaningful for children. More Than Letters contains an extensive whole-language curriculum that creates classroom environments that surround children with meaningful print.

Each activity is accompanied by a photograph and a detailed explanation of how to set up the activity and construct materials. Also included are suggestions for comments and questions teachers can use to encourage phonetic awareness in their children.

About the Authors:
Sally Moomaw is Professional Development Coordinator and Adjunct Instructor at the Arlitt Child and Family Research and Education Center at the University of Cincinnati. She designs workshops for inservice teachers, videotapes distance learning courses, consults with other early childhood centers, and works directly with children in the center.

Brenda Hieronymus is an Early Childhood Education Specialist and Adjunct Instructor at the Arlitt Center, where she teaches young children from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, develops and implements state-of-the-art curriculum materials, mentors practicum students, and teaches college courses.

Sally and Brenda have coauthored More Than Counting, More Than Magnets, More Than Painting, and Much More Than Counting. Sally also wrote More Than Singing. Brenda was named the Teacher of the Year in 1999 by the Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children.
