Book Synopsis

The other marine engineering textbook, Marine Engineering, focuses on design, whereas this two-volume text is for students and engineers engaged in ship operations, ship maintenance and repair, and shipbuilding. The first edition was published in 1943, but the second, 50 years later, was entirely new to reflect the very different technology, and the third edition is revised from that. The two volumes are indexed separately. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This new edition offers the fundamental elements required to help engineers stay current on ways to benefit from technological advances in these rapidly changing times. Although primarily a source of information on steam and gas turbine power plants, it also covers the personal computer. Topics include thermal sciences and engineering, engineering materials, steam power plants, bearing application and lubrication, steam generation, marine steam and gas turbines, petroleum fuels, mechanical transmissions systems, heat exchangers and desalination, piping components and systems, fluid transfer devices, management and safety of marine engineering operations, computerized maintenance management, and classification and regulatory requirements. Hunt is a consulting engineer. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
