MARY ANNE NICHOLS is a former school-age and young adult librarian for the Akron-Summit County (Ohio) Public Library and has been active in the Ohio Library Council's Young Adult Services Division, serving as Coordinator and Secretary. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at Kent State University's School of Library and Information Science, teaching graduate workshops on young adult services. Along with her husband, Allen, Mary Anne co-edited Young Adults and Public Libraries: A Handbook of Materials and Services (Greenwood, 1998) and together they edit the Greenwood Professional Guides for Young Adult Librarians series.
The first available book for young adult librarians who need to learn the marketing and merchandising techniques that will make library materials more attractive and accessible to teens.
Having served young adults in a public library for 14 years, Nichols (SLIS, Kent State Univ.) argues that libraries, in marketing their collections and services to teenagers, need to be just as aggressive as the brand-name advertisers that target adolescents. "Dusty library books shelved spine out are not going to cut it," she writes. Her guide discusses basic marketing and merchandising concepts that can be applied to a library setting. A final chapter offers display ideas to get started.-WWW Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
