Men die younger and when sick they seek help later. While it is now accepted that many of the causes of premature death in men are potentially remediable by appropriate education, counseling, diagnosis, and therapy, few, if any, inroads have been made in terms of actually closing the mortality gap between the sexes. Why, given the facts, is men's health still so neglected?
Taking a comprehensive approach, Men's Health, Edition 2 fills a gap in the available literature on specifically male health issues. Completely revised and updated, the second edition covers disease management, maintenance, and prevention. The editors address the full range of men's healthcare problems, from sexual to surgical, medical to psychiatric, and including illness prevention and health maintenance.
Like its predecessor, this new edition is intended not only for primary care practitioners, who wrestle everyday with the consequences of ill health among men, but also for specialists such as cardiologists, urologists, and others, who deal with the diseases that afflict men. A well-illustrated clinical guide, the textbook is an exhaustive reference on male health from childhood to old age.
This text is a comprehensive approach to the unique health problems of males. The editors note that while numerous texts address women's health issues, very few books focus on comprehensive approaches to men's health. This text is written to provide a ready reference to the healthcare problems of men. This effort is important and timely, and the editors are to be congratulated. Intended for students, house officers, and clinicians, this text will be appreciated by all members of the healthcare team who care for men. The British editors have done an excellent job of enlisting noted contributors from around the world. The editors effectively address a full range of men's healthcare problems, ranging from sexual issues to surgical, medical, and psychiatric issues, and finally to illness prevention and health maintenance. The text is well illustrated and makes for easy reading. Although most healthcare topics pertinent to men are covered, the limited nature of the text prevents contributors from discussing some issues such as coronary artery disease in the depth that some physicians will require. This is one of the best books in the field to address the unique aspects of men's healthcare. It is truly a comprehensive approach to disease management as well as health maintenance and prevention in the care of the male patient. It will be a welcome addition to the shelf of any physician who cares for males.
