Book Synopsis

Slocum (history and humanities, Capital U., Ohio) casts more light on the 1,000 years that are still emerging from their reputation as The Dark Ages, by integrating and presenting the many varied facets of medieval culture and civilization. Necessarily sacrificing depth for breadth, she explores in chronological order such aspects as Islam, the Carolingian Empire, the agricultural revolution, pilgrimage and Crusades, the 12-century Renaissance, and new currents in religion. She includes a glossary without pronunciation guides. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
