Description:This is a well written and useful book for learning medical terminology. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose:As stated by the author, the goal was "to present a comprehensive introduction and overview of medical terminology in a straightforward and easy manner for students who had no previous background in biology or medicine." The author has certainly achieved this goal. Books such as this are very important because becoming proficient at medical terminology is crucial to the success of professionals in many fields.
Audience:The audience includes all allied health students, including those in career schools, colleges, hospitals, and other settings. The scope and level of this book is appropriate for this audience.
Features:The first chapter starts by describing basic word structure and builds from there. It provides the necessary information to begin learning medical terminology immediately. A variety of tools assist learners, including illustrations and photographs, written exercises, review questions, practical applications, and puzzles. Roughly half the book is composed of three interesting appendixes and a fairly extensive glossary. A CD-ROM and audio CD are also included.
Assessment:This is an outstanding resource for anyone who has the desire to learn medical terminology. The methods used are practical as well as enjoyable. The author's great care in describing word pronunciations, word part meanings, and definitions will help to maximize the student's chance of success. The complex and ever-expanding vocabulary of medicine justifies the publication of this edition as well as others in the future.
