Book Synopsis

Manual of Clinical Procedures in Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, & Rodents, Third Edition offers readers expanded coverage of small exotic mammals, such as gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs, alongside a thorough revision of frequently used procedures for dogs, cats, and rabbits. Using the same accessible format of earlier editions, the third edition maintains its status as a classic veterinary clinical manual.

The Manual covers practical, up-to-date information on common veterinary procedures. The text includes details on restraint and positioning, anesthesia, surgical technique, and medical management. The essential knowledge for each section is presented clearly and concisely: purposes of the procedure, possible complications, equipment needed, and preparations. Procedures new to this edition include blood transfusions, placement of intraosseous catheters, and tracheostomy. Detailed line drawings demonstrate not only pertinent anatomical relationships, but also operational motions.

Manual of Clinical Procedures in Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, & Rodents serves as a valuable reference and is an essential purchase for small and exotic animal veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Karen L Campbell, DVM, MS, DACVIM, DACVD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description:This practical manual with up-to-date information on common veterinary procedures for small animals has been expanded to include basic restraint, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures in rodents and rabbits.
Purpose:A guide for these procedures is very helpful in training veterinary students and technicians, but it is also useful for veterinarians who want to review prior to performing procedures that are not routine for them.
Audience:The primary audience is veterinary students and technicians. The authors include a board-certified internist, an expert in laboratory animal medicine, and a veterinary technician. Together these authors bring different perspectives to provide detailed information on the purposes, indications, contraindications, possible complications, equipment needs, and preparation for each procedure.
Features:The 15 chapters in part I detail routine clinical procedures, part II includes 15 chapters describing specialized clinical procedures, part III has four chapters on emergency procedures, and part IV concludes with three chapters on routine clinical procedures in small mammals. The chapters include step-by-step technical information along with the rationale for each step. Excellent line drawings illustrate the majority of procedures. The bibliography in each chapter will be useful for those wanting to find additional references for the procedures. The manual also includes an excellent index.
Assessment:Although this book provides more details on the rationale for various procedures compared to other books on clinical procedures, it lacks the information on history taking and physical diagnosis found in Small Animal Physical Diagnosis and Clinical Procedures, McCurnin and Poffenbarger (Elsevier, 1991). However, the addition of new chapters on rabbits and rodents and expanded use of illustrations justifies the purchase of this new, third edition. This book will be very useful in helping users know both how and when to use each procedure.
