The book sets out to argue that pastoral care has often been maintained rather than managed and that a lack of rigour has characterized attempts to monitor and evaluate provision. Pastoral care of students and staff must be valued and clearly thought out, especially at a time of scarce resources. Pastoral care must address issues of welfare and well-being but it should go beyond this. Central to the contributors' proposals is that pastoral care does contribute to, and should be a vehicle for, improving academic achievement. The book deals with a number of key issues relating to pastoral care and personal-social education, including organization, resourcing, liaising with outside agencies, the issue of gender, pastoral care of staff, evaluation and training. It advocates a holistic approach to planning and implementation which incorporates best practice.
